Akira Nakagomi's inspiration for this design emerged from the ubiquitous presence of partitions in living spaces due to Covid-19. Dissatisfied with the temporary and cheaply designed partitions, Nakagomi sought to create a product that not only served its purpose during the pandemic but could also add color and life to spaces post-pandemic. The Object is a testament to this vision, functioning as an art piece that enhances the aesthetics of a room while ensuring safety.
The Object's unique properties lie in its design and material. Crafted from brightly colored acrylic and supported by simple bent brass, the partition set is more than a tasteless barrier. Its art-like composition is sustainable and is designed to exist as an object of beauty even after the pandemic. The circular acrylic is inserted into a 6mm bent brass, and a 110mm t20mm round brass is used as a weight to prevent it from tipping over. This simple yet elegant design sets it apart from other partitions.
The design realization technology of the Object is straightforward yet effective. The brass is bent to support the circular acrylic, and another set can be connected around the brass weight for fixing. The acrylic comes in two types: smoked and colored. As an optional feature, a wooden flower base can be attached, adding another layer of functionality and aesthetic appeal to the design.
The Object was designed and created in Japan, with the project starting in April 2020 and concluding in June 2021. It was exhibited in New Norma New Standard in October 2020 and New Norma New Standard 2 in June 2021. The design process involved extensive research on existing anti-corona splash-proof partitions, leading to the creation of a partition that not only serves its function but also enhances the beauty of the space it occupies.
The Object has been recognized for its innovative design and functionality, winning the Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2022. This prestigious award is granted to outstanding creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics. Akira Nakagomi's design certainly fits this description, revolutionizing the concept of partitions and setting a new standard in interior design amidst a global pandemic.
